Since the brutal attack on our
homeland on September 11, 2001, Ohio has lost 188 men and women while
serving on active duty fighting the Global War on Terrorism.
On June 30, 2007, a special memorial was dedicated to
honor all of the Ohio Military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice
defending our country.
The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial, Inc. is a non-profit,
501(c)(3) corporation that was established to construct and maintain a living memorial
for Ohio residents who lost their lives fighting the War on Terrorism. The
Memorial Park honors all service members who gave their
lives while serving in military operations since September 11, 2001.
The Village of Sunbury has generously provided the land
for the Memorial site. George Parker, a well-respected central Ohio
architect, designed the plans for the Memorial. A monument in the shape of
the State of Ohio greets all visitors. A cross, the Star of David and
other appropriate symbols display the service members name, branch and
date of death.
Each service member will be recognized as an individual;
someone who is dearly missed by family and friends. This Memorial is a
place where returning veterans and family members who have lost friends or
comrades can remember and honor them.
An eternal flame and a chapel is located in the memorial.
The service flags of all branches of the
military, in addition to a POW/MIA flag proudly surrounds this area.
A Courtyard of Honor is part of the memorial so that an
all-night vigil to honor our Fallen Heroes can take place each year. The
memorial service will be followed by a continuous honor guard detail from
6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on the date of the Memorial Service. The United
States flag is displayed on a 50-foot flagpole in front of the walkway. The
Park is professionally landscaped with seasonal plants and flowers.
The fallen heroes of Ohio have given the ultimate
sacrifice to their country and state. One of the ways we can honor their
sacrifice is by remembering them.
On behalf of the OFHM committee volunteers and gold star
family members, I want to express my sincere thank you in advance for the
donation that you or your company makes to this worthy project honoring our
Fallen Heroes.
